Skills Event 2016 (back in my day!)

Last week I was working at the Norfolk Skills event at the Norfolk Showground on the Apprenticeships Norfolk stand, (our brand new very high tech stand - may I add!) The day before, Chris (my fellow apprentice) and I had the opportunity to have a play, I mean, have a go, at setting up all the new equipment. We have whizzy new tablets and a touch screen TV, as well as a massive 8 foot banner. It looks really smart and impressive and I was excited to see it up at an event for the first time.

The Norfolk Skills event had young people from all over the county enthusiastically trying out what training providers had on offer on their interactive stands. This was great because there was the opportunity to talk about future careers in a memorable and fun way - this is just what young people need!

I turned 24 last week too! It made me think back to services that were available when I was last at school (8 years ago! *gulp). ‘Back in my day’, we really weren’t informed about Apprenticeships or different routes to take once leaving high school. College or 6th form - that was about it. Events like the skills fair allow young people to look at the different options available. This makes me happy!

I have to mention Chris too! He was involved in the setup of the event from the very beginning. I was amazed how cool and calm he stayed throughout. If you have read one of my previous blogs ‘Don't be afraid to triple check’, you’ll know I am a planner and a worrier. Chris is very laid back and the pressure of helping run such a large event didn’t seem to phase him. I don’t think I would have been as calm - though he did have a walkie talkie and that always makes you feel powerful.

I can’t wait to be involved in more events like this, it’s great to be able to work all over Norfolk in a variety of different settings. I love my job, it’s great to be an apprentice!

If you missed the Skills event, come to the By Apprentices event on Friday, 18 March at 10.00am – 4.00pm in the Forum, Norwich where you’ll see some amazing things made by apprentices.
